Prince George Parks and Recreation

Ancient Rainforest in Prince George
Ancient Rainforest

Outdoor or indoor, recreation is in no way lacking in Prince George. There are 1600 lakes and rivers, four ski hills, eight golf courses, and hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and cross-country trails essentially right around the corner. Boredom isn’t an option in a city that has facilities for every indoor persuasion and literally thousands and thousands of acres of wilderness.

In the summer, bike riding and rollerblading are common occurrences, but they are just the beginning. If hiking is more your thing, try taking a day trip to one of the beautiful trails found within or just outside of Prince George. There are also opportunities for horseback riding, rock climbing, camping, and caving for the more adventurous. For those who prefer a more relaxing version of the great outdoors, you can hit up your favorite golf course to practice your swing or one of the lakefront beaches found within 30 kilometers from town, or find a quite stream for some amazing fishing experiences.

Keeping the kids busy when school is out is never an issue with more than 120 parks, numerous playgrounds, a water-spray park, go-karts, and picnicking areas.

The winters in Prince George are just as full of outdoor fun as the summers. Ice rinks, both indoor and outdoor can be found all over the city. The wonderful trails you hiked in the summer are transformed into a snowshoeing winter wonderland. Cross-country skiers replace the bikers on the groomed trails that cover the Prince George backcountry. For the fast-paced snow-lovers, snowboarding and downhill skiing can be found on one of our local hills or a bigger hill found just hours out of town. The snowmobile enthusiast has a seemingly endless amount of space to ride. And for the younger children, Prince George is home to some of the best sledding hills around.

If you prefer the indoors, Prince George has offerings for you as well. Two aquatic centres and an indoor adventure playground complete with laser tag provide an excellent source of fun and exercise. You can take advantage of an indoor climbing wall and both 5-pin and 10-pin bowling alleys. For those who like a little history, within a two hour radius of Prince George is the Huble Homestead, a fully-restored turn-of-the-century trading post, the Fort St. James National Historic Park, and Barkerville, which is perhaps the most famous historical site in the central interior.

Dr. Geoffrey Payne, Assistant Dean of the Northern Medical Program at UNBC moved here from the US because it was a great place to raise a family.
