Community cancer clinics help to provide closer-to-home cancer services for local residents. An integrated network of ten community clinics located at Northern Health sites across the region provide a range of services and programs, including:
Northern patients are benefiting from various cancer clinic enhancements. Two new clinics in Vanderhoof and Haida Gwaii have joined the community network in the North, and clinic services in Dawson Creek and Smithers have undergone renovations to improve patient service.
In March 2008, the Ellen van Andel Cancer Clinic was officially opened at Vanderhoof’s St. John Hospital. The new cancer clinic was named after the late Ruby Ellen van Andel, a long-time Vanderhoof resident whose family contributed $200,000 in renovations and equipment for the clinic.
Care providers had locally worked towards the clinic for several years prior to 2007, at which time the BC Cancer Agency and Northern Health jointly approved a business case for the new service and its ongoing operating costs.
A new cancer clinic at the Queen Charlotte Islands General Hospital on Haida Gwaii was officially opened in September 2009. A part time certified chemo-nurse, supported by both Northern Health (NH) and the BC Cancer Agency, is providing regular weekly service to patients on-island. A pharmacist and two physicians with General Practitioner of Oncology qualifications are also a key part of the new clinic. The clinic also received $55,000 in funding from NH for upgrades including furnishings, a triple line IV pump and a mixing hood to allow chemo-drug prep onsite (instead of being shipped in via floatplane). In addition, the Queen Charlotte Hospital Day Foundation provided $8,000 in funding to purchase a flat screen TV and mount, a leather lounge chair and Stryker Go II bed for patient comfort during treatment.
