The University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (formerly known as Prince George Regional Hospital) is a regional referral hospital serving North Central British Columbia. The hospital serves an immediate population of 80,000 and acts as a referral centre for a population of approximately 200,000 in the surrounding region.
The University Hospital is a vibrant and growing health facility that’s equipped to provide northerners with a wide range of specialized health services and procedures. The hospital has 209 acute beds which includes 10 combined ICU/CCU beds, 18 Paediatric beds (4 of which are in the Paediatric Special Care Unit), 21 Maternity beds and 15 beds in the Rehabilitation Unit. There are also 72 Extended Care beds in Jubilee Lodge as well as 37 Chemical Dependency beds. There are approximately 120 physicians on staff of whom 55 are specialists. The Surgical Suite includes 5 full time OR's and there are 7 full time Anaesthetists on staff.
In 2004, completion of a $50 million upgrade which included a new patient complex and expanded patient care services, transformed the hospital into a modern facility that provides improved diagnosis and treatment for northern residents. These improvements have boosted the recruitment of health professionals to the community. Advances in technology, new equipment and the launch of the Northern Medical Program at UNBC for training a local supply of physicians has put Prince George on the leading edge of northern and rural health care excellence.
Since 2004 The University Hospital has taken on a new role as a clinical academic campus for undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia. The University Hospital hosts residents in UBC’s Family Practice Residency Program and is also a key clinical education site for nursing and other health sciences students at UNBC and the College of New Caledonia.
